Hi I'm new here,
12 months ago my husband, daughter, brother in law and i went to Tassie for a holiday(we are from Northam W. A ) and fell in love with it. We currently own a video shop, but have put the shop on the market to sell, looks like we have a buyer and if all goes to plan we will be heading over to live for a while around march/april. we are not sure what to do for work yet, i have been ill for the past 12 months so i hav'nt been able to work much. We won't have a lot of money, but will have enough to get ourselves into a rental. We will be travelling across the nullabour with our small caravan and 2 dogs. We are having trouble with getting a caravan park that take pets. It is a big decision and a scary one. Not sure if my daughter will come as her boyfriend doesn't want to go now, She is only `16 and i feel sick leaving her behind. I know i have to let go sometime. My son is 19 lives in Perth with his girlfriend and i feel bad leaving him behind too, but it is our dream ( has been for more than 12 months now and it could be finally happening) Our house is currently on the market and if it doesn't sell before we go we will rent it out.
Please tell me i'm not a bad mum for leaving my kids behind cause i feel real bad about it. my daughter said she'd come for a little while but i don't want to break up her and her boyfriend. My daughter also can't let go yet she misses us too much when wer'e AWAY
i CAN'T WAIT TO GO. We won't be working so much and my husband and i can spend more time together as work has come between us for a while now. has anyone else done anything similar to this.
Deb.

Hi Deb and welcome. Met a Deb while I was in Freemantle last year... nice person, but did not own a video shop or live in Northam
Personally I think kids today hang around the nest far too long. Yes, 16 is still young, but sooner or later we all have to start taking responsibility for our own lives and succeed or fall on our own abilities. If you guys are arriving around the time you suggest you will all freeze down here and she will want to run back to WA as fast as possible. You ain't a bad mum for letting her have the freedom to explore her own potentials and build her own future. You will all miss and worry about each other, but that is just part of life.
can totally understand why you want to move here with a passion... it is the best place on the planet
You may have trouble finding a van park that will take pets, and you have not mentioned which region you are planning on heading for. I did find this listing and this list also but I would double check as a couple of random parks I looked at from that list were not pet friendly. The other option, if you don't mind being without power or running water and amenities blocks is to look at reserves in the area you plan on going to. Most of those allow dogs provided they are kept on a leash.
Best of luck with it all and please be sure to keep us posted on your journey.

IE screwed up the links and spacing and I have had to edit and repost.
Hi Deb,
I have to agree with everything Mystic has said... Also there comes a time in life when you have to put yourself first for a change. Although you never said what breed your dogs are I have another site that could be of interest to you, you will find it here Most of them are cabins etc they may well be able to advise you of any other dog friendly places in the area. this one (some one else's review, also check out their older posts link) is 30mins from Devonport and local to me and I know they take dogs plus the price is good and you may be able to negotiate a long term stay.
Its also close to nearby major towns of Burnie, Penguin and Ulverstone plus if you head north there a general store at Riana and if you head south there is an IGA supermarket and grog-outlet at South Riana, each one is a couple of K's either down or up the road, both shops are Australian Post Offices (somewhere to have your mail re-directed, c/o PO @, if need be) and they both supply petrol and diesel and have reasonable fuel prices by Tassie standards. Google Earth it.
This'll get some hackles up....... I'm totaly biased, but I think you will find the North West and West Coast camping and caravan parks more accepting of your dogs especially if they are seen to be under good control and well behaved. Hehe......
I would steer clear of the East Coast due to the constant influx of visitors and holiday campers, especially @ this time of year, but not to say that it would be a great place to be for awhile.
Have you looked through our camping area run downs in the forum?
You may find somewhere totally free to camp and stay for awhile so you can take a breather while you slow down to our pace and get sorted.
Hmm, work to do............ If you need any more help or any Central Coast, NW Tas, local info... just ask.

Hi Deb and welcome to Real Tas
I can't really add to much to what Mystic said, but I think the kids will be fine and so will you, after all with the internet these days you can still chat face to face and see they are ok. Sure it doesn't beat direct contact but will make those times when you are together more special
Have a look through the sit, I think there may be a few topics that will give you a little guidance.

Hah! Hah!.........give the kid's a peck on the cheek and smile as you wave the little B............um!..... darlings goodbye
16......I remember when my .......cherub was 16.....rotten little mongrel,....me, me, me,............chuck your knickers in a satchel and get your butt over to Tas..........she will have had a dozen boy friends by the end of the week and be ready for a heap more by the time your settled.....that's the way kids are nowadays
do what you wish to do while you have a choice about doing it.....your kids will either hate you for the rest of your life (normal) or they will get over it and come and see you (doubtful)
either way won't be the right decision so just go and do it!....
won't give you advice on where to go on the prison settlement as I can't expand on what the experts have said so I will just wish you all the best of british
oh! and welcome to the site......did i mention they are all great folks in here......proud to call them all friends!
if I can help you with any information that is totally useless and guaranteed to be of absolutely no help just ask.......I'm a damn fine listener and yakker

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those that mind, dont matter and those that matter, dont mind!!!
if you come across someone without a smile,.................. give them one of your's....... and watch it grow!
never be mean with a kind word, ........................you may need one yourself one day!
just as I get used to today along comes tomorrow!

Gee Thanks everyone for your reply's. haven't been on for a few days. been busy cleaning up the house. Have had a few people looking already and it's only been on the market a little over a week!
Spent 2 nights ago in Perth for my sons 19th, we went out for dinner and stayed for a few drinks. Took some more of his stuff down packed in boxes.
The region we are looking at moving to is Shear water, we like the quite and when we visited last year we enjoyed the fishing. We also like the idea it is close to Devon port as we have friends from Northam who have moved there and a Nephew.
The dogs we have are a Maltese Shiatsu (tiny little thing) and a black long coat Labrador retriever. Both are very well behaved dogs. We have been practising travelling with them. The little one just curls up to sleep. The big one gets a bit anxious but he's slowly getting used to it. We should't have trouble finding a rental as my husband used to be in real estate and has contacts over there. Just not sure what to do for work My husband has worked so much these past couple of months as i have been in and out of hospital (had a hysterectomy) so we don't want to work as much as we have. He also can't do any physical work because he has a bad back so we would ideally like to buy a small business. We have one in mind but it will still be a lot of work.
We may just take a couple of months just to take a break and then decide. It seems such a gamble and that scares me too but we're not getting any younger. I guess everything happens for a reason and we just gotta take the plunge now!!!

I suppose the only thing I could recommend is to go with your heart. Take time out for yourselves and look into work prospects when you get down here. Why not take the plunge? Risk is a part of life these days...
